Instead of tearing up the stage in Rio tonight, Lady Gaga has been forced to seek medical attention due to “severe physical pain.”

On Thursday, the day before the singer was set to perform at the massive music festival Rock in Rio, Gaga posted on social media that what she originally thought was “simply hip pain or wear and tear from tour” was actually something more. Gaga reported that she had been taken to the hospital and was therefore cancelling her Set. 15 performance in Rio.

The cancellation is particularly upsetting for Gaga, who says that Rio is very near and dear to her heart—so much so that she has the city’s name tattooed on the back of her neck in the handwriting of children from the favelas (i.e. the city’s slums).

Gaga has been open about her long-time struggle with chronic pain. In a 2016 IG post, she talked about how she regularly suffers from muscle spasms. She also detailed the various methods that she has used to manage her pain—which include an infrared sauna, silver emergency blankets and ice baths. But audiences will learn more in her upcoming Netflix documentary, Lady Gaga: Five Foot Two, where she reveals that she has fibromyalgia, an incurable chronic condition that causes widespread pain across the body. She has also posted more about the condition on social media this week.

Though more than 519,000 Canadians have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, according to Statistics Canada, yet the disease remains poorly understood. According to the Canadian Women’s Health Network, some patients can develop the condition after “a traumatic experience such as an accident, an emotional trauma, overworking, hormonal changes, sexual or physical abuse during childhood, or a viral disease.” But there’s still no proven cause.

 

 

The announcement comes only days after Gaga attended TIFF, where she strutted down the red carpet for the premiere of Five Foot Two and wowed the crowd with solo performance of “Bad Romance.” (The doc will be available on Netflix on Sept. 22.)

Maroon 5 has confirmed that they will be taking Lady Gaga’s slot at Rock in Rio, playing this Friday and Saturday.

 

 

While there’s no update on when Mother Monster may be ready to slay once again, she reported that she is now “in good hands w/ the very best doctors.” Get well soon, Gaga!
